GM TRENDS aims to gather up-to-date information on changing and emerging substance use trends in Greater Manchester. The findings inform the Greater Manchester Local Drugs Information System and are used to provide recommendations to local authorities regarding the development and delivery of services for substance users. The identification of emerging trends helps to ensure that commissioners, service providers and local professionals who come into contact with people who use drugs (PWUDs) are best placed to understand their local needs and the  services required. The identification of at-risk groups in our communities is important to ensure that appropriate needs assessment and support are provided. The GM street drug survey report draws on three sources: an online survey of 212 professionals, 85 in depth interviews with professionals, and interviews with 48 individuals who use ‘street drugs’. Eligibility criteria required participants to be currently using at least one of the following substances: heroin, crack cocaine, synthetic cannabinoids (‘Spice’), benzodiazepines, or pregabalin. The aim was to engage approximately four participants from each of the ten Greater Manchester areas. To ensure we captured the perspectives of both people in treatment and those not engaged with treatment services, recruitment was facilitated through a mix of drug treatment providers, homeless drop-in centres, homelessness charities, and supported accommodation.
