Alcohol Statistics Dashboard

Welcome to the HRB alcohol statistics dashboard

Alcohol use is the 9th leading risk factor for both deaths and disability-adjusted life years globally and is the leading risk factor among those aged 25–49 years. In Ireland, alcohol use is responsible for four deaths every day and causes many conditions, such as alcohol dependence and alcohol-related liver disease, as well as common health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Although a decrease in alcohol use in Ireland has been observed, alcohol continues to place a burden on society. In 2018, the Public Health (Alcohol) Act was passed in acknowledgement of our harmful drinking patterns and related harms. The HRB periodically publishes alcohol overviews to collate information about alcohol use and trends, as well as the consequences of our alcohol use and these reports contribute towards our understanding of the impact of the legislation. This dashboard supplements the overviews in providing more up-to-date information by presenting data and evidence on alcohol-related health and social harms in Ireland across multiple themes including:

  • Per capita alcohol use
  • Alcohol-related hospital discharges
  • Alcohol-related mortality
  • Alcohol-related criminal behaviour
  • Alcohol-related prescriptions
  • Treatment for alcohol use
  • Alcohol availability

The data presented here provide a snapshot of the available information and links to the original source for further details are available. More comprehensive information is available in the HRB alcohol overviews that we will continue to publish over time.

Source: Primary Care Reimbursement Service (PCRS)
Note: The PCRS contains data on medicines dispensed to those with full eligibility for the General Medical Services (GMS) scheme (based on means testing). The GMS scheme does not include private prescriptions (i.e. prescriptions where the patient is not eligible for free or subsidised schemes) or prescriptions dispensed in hospitals.
The PCRS does not capture data in relation to diagnoses or indications for the medicines reimbursed, and therefore the information presented here should be interpreted with caution. The medications listed here are approved for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) or alcohol withdrawal, but it is not definitively known if that is what they were prescribed for in all instances.
