The Killinarden Drug Primary Prevention Group (KDPPG) has been operational in Killinarden, west Tallaght since 1993. The project receives funding from Tallaght Drugs Task Force. The project was set up as a response to the serious drugs situation in Killinarden and concern about the lack of information or misinformation which existed around the issue of drugs. The main target group of the project is young people attending primary and secondary school in the Killinarden area, many who would be considered 'at risk'. The project works through eight trained facilitators and has a number of programmes including drug awareness, self-esteem and assertiveness. The development of the project's activities are monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis. Feedback from the project suggests that pupils, teachers and parents feel that the project is extremely relevant and necessary within the community. Future priorities for the project includes securing additional funding in order to continue carrying out programmes in schools, acquiring additional staff, locating suitable premises and providing ongoing training to facilitation team.
