The Joint Committee on Drugs Use, chaired by Deputy Gary Gannon, met on Thursday, 22 January 2026, to discuss the rising use and dangers of nitrous oxide and other inhalants. The Committee was joined by officials from the HSE and the Health Research Board including:
- Professor Bobby Smyth, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Adolescent Addiction Service (HSE)
- Mr Joe Doyle, National Lead for Social Inclusion Services (HSE)
- Ms Mary O'Kelly, Integrated Healthcare Area Manager (HSE)
- Dr Suzi Lyons, Head of National Health Information Systems with responsibility for the National Drug-Related Deaths Index and the National Drug Treatment Reporting System (Health Research Board)
- Dr Deirdre Mongan, Research Officer with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy and Early Warning System for drugs (Health Research Board).
The Committee also heard from Dermot and Yvonne Maguire, who will appear in a personal capacity. Dermot and Yvonne tragically lost their son, Daniel, in September 2025 following the inhalation of aerosol deodorant. Since then, Daniel’s family has worked to raise awareness of the dangers associated with inhalant use, particularly among young people.
