This bulletin presents figures from the National Drug‐Related Deaths Index (NDRDI) on deaths due to poisoning (overdose) by alcohol and/or other drugs, and deaths among people who use drugs (non-poisoning), for the period 2008–2017.

 

In the ten‐year period 2008–2017, there were 3,715 (54%) poisoning deaths. Poisonings (overdoses) are deaths in the general population that are due to the toxic effect of one or more drug(s) including alcohol. Also, in this period, there were 3,218 (46%) non-poisoning deaths. Non‐poisonings are deaths among people who use drugs that are not due to poisoning.
