Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality globally and is responsible for 2.6 million deaths annually.1 It also affects younger people to a greater extent, accounting for 13% of deaths of those aged 20 to 39. Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is a leading cause of cirrhosis worldwide, representing approximately 60% of the cases of cirrhosis in Europe and the Americas.2 Alcohol consumption also interacts with metabolic syndrome to promote metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-related liver disease (MetALD).
