In the 20 years from 1999 to 2019, nearly 500 000 individuals in the US died of opioid-involved overdoses, as annual drug overdose deaths quadrupled.2 In the next 10 years, almost 500 000 more opioid-involved overdose deaths were projected,3 even before escalating overdose deaths since the COVID-19 pandemic. These past and projected fatalities, which do not capture broader consequences of the epidemic (eg, morbidity, bereavement, health care costs, criminal justice costs, lost productivity), illustrate the magnitude of this crisis....
