Interactive data visuals - explore trends in child and adolescent health behaviour in Ireland. The data visual presents findings by gender and age group or by gender and social class. Years range from 1998 to 2018.

The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey is a WHO collaborative cross-national study that monitors the health behaviours, health outcomes and social environments of school-aged children every four years. HBSC Ireland surveys school-going children aged 9-18 years. The study is conducted by the HBSC Ireland team, based at the Health Promotion Research Centre, University of Galway.

Trends in Health Behaviours 1998-2022
Current smoker: Children were asked how often they smoke at present. The response ranged from ‘I do not smoke’ to ‘every day’. Current smokers, defined as smoking monthly or more frequently, are presented in this visual.

Ever been drunk: Children were asked if they have ever had so much alcohol that they were really drunk. The response options ranged from ‘never’ to ‘yes, more than 10 times’. The findings in this visual present the percentage of children who reported having ever been drunk.

Cannabis use in the last 12 months: Children were asked if they have taken cannabis in the last 12 months. The response options ranged from ‘never’ to ‘40 times or more’. The findings in this visual present the percentage of children who reported cannabis use in the last 12 months.
