This one day course on Dual Diagnosis will be delivered live online by subject expert Dr. Seán Foy, using Zoom.  The training sets out to provide a clear overview of Dual Diagnosis Disorders and its implications for treatment and practice. Seán has specialised in the areas of Addiction and Mental Health over the last 25 years and continues to be heavily involved in this area in his work as a clinical psychologist. He has recently delivered a briefing on Dual Diagnosis to the Oireachtas Group on Drug Policy Reform.

 ‘Dual Diagnosis’ is the term used when a person suffers from both a drug and/or alcohol issue and a mental health issue. Traditionally there has been much debate as regards the best way to treat clients and service users who have a dual diagnosis. This debate has resulted in clients being treated (in some cases) in two separate services. The American Medical Association states that up to 37% of alcohol abusers and 53% of drug abusers have at least one mental health diagnosis.

The aim of this workshop is to provide an overview of Dual Diagnosis. There will be space and time allowed for the development of discussion around dual diagnosis and the knowledge and experience of the group members is valued. There will be “real” scenarios taken from the group and then worked with by the group.  This is done to enhance the learning experience and to make the connection between theory and practice. There will be a strong emphasis on knowing the interface between, addiction work and psychiatry and the opportunity to explore the limits of one’s own competencies when working with clients or service users who have a dual diagnosis.
