Objectives

Online learning in your own time:  The course covers a range of areas to provide participants with a good basic knowledge of drugs and alcohol and related issues.

A total of 16 hours should be allocated to complete and fully participate in the course.  Participants will be provided the opportunity to learn about different types of drugs and their effects. The programme will also explore the areas of Tolerance, Dependence and Withdrawal.  Cannabis and alcohol have a module each in this course to reflect their prevalence in society. The impact of addiction on family members is explored as well as treatment options for a person with a substance misuse issue. At the end of each module there is a quiz to evaluate the understanding of the material as you progress through the individual topics.

The course was developed and designed by Dr. Sean Foy and Liam O'Loughlin. Sean is a Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years experience of working in the addiction field. He holds additional qualifications in social work and psychotherapy. He is a published author and regularly lectures on addiction and mental health in Ireland and abroad. Liam O'Loughlin has been working in services for people affected by addiction for 25 years plus and is a subject expert on the negative effects of problematic drug and alcohol use on those around the drinker and/or drug user. He holds a Masters in Drug and Alcohol Policy from Trinity College Dublin.
