Alcohol Related Brain Injury (ARBI)
It is estimated that 35% of people who are alcohol dependent will have some form of Alcohol-related Brain Injury (ARBI).

ARBI is an umbrella term that encompasses a number of conditions including cognitive dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, liver encephalopathy, and the more commonly associated conditions of Wernickie’s Encephalopathy and Korsakoff’s Amnesic Syndrome. The onset of these conditions can be insidious, with symptoms being difficult to detect. ARBI is preventable and it is treatable.

This course will explore:
- What is ARBI?
-What are the impacts of ARBI on the individual, their family, and the services they come in contact with?
- Adaptations that can be made in providing person-centred treatment to people at risk of ARBI

Training in the use of a validated screening tool, developed by ARBIAS, in detecting the possible presence of an acquired brain injury will be available to those who complete this course.

Course Content:
This course offers insight into the complexity that is Alcohol-related Brain Injury and demonstrates, through interactive discussion and presentation of underpinning research and case studies, how your service can support people at risk of these conditions.

Learning Outcomes:
It is envisaged that participants will have a comprehensive understanding of Alcohol-related Brain Injury and how to support people at risk of having one of these conditions.

Participants will receive the opportunity to access training on using a validated screening tool to detect the possible present of an acquired brain injury, to use within their service upon completion of this course.

Trainer Profile:
Maria Powers is the coordinator of the WRDATF Drug and Alcohol Family Support Service. From previous experience in working with people with complex addiction, Maria acquired knowledge and skills in identifying and supporting people at risk of having an ARBI. She is passionate about empowering others to do the same.

Anyone who is striving to support people who use alcohol in a harmful way, or supporting family members/carers of people who misuse alcohol.
