Marijuana, the most common cannabis product, is a mixture of dried flowers, leaves, and seeds from cannabis plants. The primary psychoactive ingredient in cannabis is Δ9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabis is currently legal for treatment and/or recreational purposes in all US states except Idaho and the District of Columbia.1 In 2021, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health documented that 13% of US individuals 12 years and older reported cannabis use within the past month. Use was highest among individuals aged 18 to 25 years (24%), and prevalence of past-month cannabis vaping was 40% among adolescents (aged 12-17 years), 27% among young adults aged 18 to 25 years, and 17.4% among individuals 26 years or older. Based on a 2018 survey of 27 169 individuals aged 16 to 65 years, 27% of adults in the US and Canada had used cannabis for treatment.
