This study explores the impact of substance use disorders (SUDs) on familial relationships and stigmatisation among Irish affected family members (AFMs). Using semi-structured qualitative interviews with 11 Irish AFMs, reflexive thematic analysis identified three key themes: dysfunctional family dynamics, the burden of caregiving and financial strain and experiences of embarrassment, stigma, and pity. Findings highlight AFMs' struggles with denial from their relatives and feelings of being pitied. Insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the AFM experience and can inform stigma reduction campaigns by promoting a more accurate public perception. Additionally, findings emphasise the importance of social support, encouraging AFMs to engage with groups like Al-Anon , and urging treatment centres to recognise and empower both AFMs and their relatives with SUD. The study included adult AFMs, including siblings, spouses and offspring, with two male participants. Inclusion of these groups, which are often underrepresented in the literature, helps address gaps in understanding AFM experiences.
