According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 107 543 deaths due to unintentional drug overdose occurred in the US in 2023. People who use drugs are also at increased risk of infection (eg, HIV; hepatitis A, B, and C; bacterial skin infections; endocarditis). To decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with drug use, clinicians can discuss the following harm reduction strategies to optimize safety when people who use drugs are not prepared to abstain from use.
E Concepts in biomedical areas > Route of administration > Injection
G Health and disease > Substance use disorder (addiction) > Drug use disorder > Drug intoxication > Poisoning (overdose)
G Health and disease > Disease by cause (Aetiology) > Communicable / infectious disease
G Health and disease > Disease by cause (Aetiology) > Communicable / infectious disease > HIV
G Health and disease > Disease by cause (Aetiology) > Communicable / infectious disease > Hepatitis A (HAV) / D (HDV) / E (HEV)
G Health and disease > Disease by cause (Aetiology) > Communicable / infectious disease > Hepatitis B (HBV)
G Health and disease > Disease by cause (Aetiology) > Communicable / infectious disease > Hepatitis C (HCV)
