Estimates for 2022 show that between 290 and 320 people were killed in collisions in Great Britain where at least one driver was over the drink-drive limit, with a central estimate of 300 deaths.
The central estimate of fatalities for 2022 is the highest level since 2009, and an increase compared to the previous year.
It is important to note that the number of reported drink-drive collisions and casualties involved in them is likely to have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the national restrictions implemented during periods of 2020 and 2021 which led to a reduction in traffic and collisions, but may also have impacted on driver behaviour. Between 2021 and 2022, there was an increase in the overall number of collisions reported with numbers broadly showing a return to levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
