...A model of care that can provide evidence-based interventions to PWID is the supervised injection centre (SIC), In March 2021, New York City opened the first supervised injection site in North America, joining 10 countries and 67 cities worldwide who already have similar facilities. Although a public health strategy to reduce overdose death and infectious disease dating back to 1986 in Switzerland with demonstrated effectiveness, SICs are frequently met with resistance and contention. The premise behind SICs is harm reduction, accepting individual substance use and meeting an individual where they are. SICs recognise that although individuals will continue to use drugs, there are ways to make use as safe as possible. The SIC is a clean, physical space where an individual has access to sterile needles to use pre-obtained drugs under the supervision of healthcare workers in a non-judgmental manner....
