• Three latent classes of anabolic androgenic steroid dependence were identified.
• Classes largely reflected severity of dependence by number of symptoms reported.
• High dependence is associated with worse self-monitoring and emotional control.
• Antagonism was the strongest predictor of high dependence symptoms.
