This paper reviews twenty years of addiction studies in Trinity College Dublin and some of the changes that have occurred in Irish thinking and policy on alcohol and drug use. The paper proposes that, during this period, while drug policy has veered towards accepting the limitations of control and regulation, drink policy has been struggling to accept the benefits that regulation and control can have in reducing alcohol related problems.
