This paper presents the preliminary results of a survey of post-primary schools students in County Dublin. Some 5,000 students were surveyed on their habits and attitudes to smoking drinking and drug taking. The objectives of the survey were: to investigate the extent of these habits; and to compare the current situation with the results of surveys from 1967 and 1970. The survey found an increase in the level of smoking by both boys and girls in the previous decade. Peer group influence is a major factor in the decision to smoke.
