This occasional paper contains information gathered by the National Drug Treatment Reporting System (NDTRS), an epidemiological database on treated drug misuse complied by the Drug Misuse Research Division (DMRD) of the Health Research Board (HRB). The data shows that prior to 1998 all North Eastern Health Board (NEHB) residents received treatment for drugs problems outside the NEHB, mainly in the Eastern Health Board Area. In 1998 71 clients presented for treatment within the NEHB, by 2000 this had risen to 250. The socio-demographic data showed that the typical client is male, around 20 years of age and living in the family home. Cannabis (61% in 2000) was the main problem drug, followed by ecstasy (17% in the same year), followed by opiates (14%). Of the 36 clients who used opiates, 16 of those injected in the year 2000, with 11 of those describing their practice as 'currently sharing', with 14 who had shared injecting equipment at some stage in their life.
