The Medical Bureau of Road Safety is responsible for chemically testing intoxicants in driving in Ireland. In 1999 a total of 8476 specimens were received for analysis. This represents an increase of 8.5% on 1998 and 28.6% increase on 1997. Between the 1st of July and 31st of December 1999 all samples submitted to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety which were under the legal limit for alcohol were tested for the presence of drugs. In total 338 samples were tested of which 37% tested positive for drugs. The occurrence of polydrug use was frequent with 45% of samples tested containing 2 or more drugs, with 3% of samples containing 5 types of drugs.
