Millar, David and O'Dwyer, Kieran and Finnegan, Mary (1998) Alcohol and drugs as factors in offending behaviour: Garda survey. Templemore: Garda Research Unit.

This study was carried out to explore the links between alcohol, drugs and crime. It builds on earlier Garda research in the area. A survey was carried out in selected Garda stations. For each detected offence, the investigating Garda was required to indicate whether alcohol or drugs were thought to be involved, and if so, why. The survey was conducted over a period of three months, from March - May 1998, and involved twenty-seven Garda stations. Alcohol was recorded as a factor in 43 percent of cases, and drugs were considered a factor in 17 percent of cases.
