OBJECTIVES: People bereaved by suicide can experience emotional and psychological burdens when engaging with institutional processes such as coronial inquests. This qualitative study examines the experiences of suicide-bereaved individuals in Ireland who have navigated the inquest system.

METHODS: The research utilises secondary data drawn from the Irish Suicide Bereavement Survey, a national survey that explored the experiences and support needs of individuals bereaved by suicide in Ireland. Data were obtained on a sub-sample of participants ( = 735) who reported having gone through the coronial inquest process as a result of suicide bereavement. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to examine participants' responses to inquest-related questions.

RESULTS: Four main themes shaped participants' experiences of the inquest process: availability and adequacy of support, communication and information provision, privacy considerations, and impact of delays and prolonged timelines. Many reported challenges related to limited support and unclear communication, which for some contributed to feelings of distress and uncertainty. Privacy concerns, particularly regarding public court settings and media involvement, were also commonly noted. Additionally, prolonged wait times were reported as a source of emotional strain for some individuals.

CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that changes to certain aspects of the inquest, such as privacy and stronger support systems, could make the inquest process easier for people who have experienced a loss through suicide. Further research could look at how specific types of support or targeted interventions could help those affected by suicide bereavement within the legal framework of inquests.
