Jim O'Callaghan, Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration: When a young person comes to the attention of An Garda Síochána because of their alleged criminal or anti-social behaviour, they are required, under section 18 of the Children Act 2001, to be first considered for the Diversion Programme.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible, by law, for the administration and management of Garda business, including the operation of the statutory Garda Youth Diversion Programme.

The tables below have been provided by Garda authorities and provide data on the number of youth diversion referrals for persons aged 12-17 years from 2021 - 2025, by Garda Division, and the number of referrals by offence category. It should be noted that the ‘Offence category’ is in line with the categories provided in the Garda Youth Diversion Programme Monitoring Reports.
