There were 15,995 admissions to approved Irish psychiatric units and hospitals in 2025 (psychiatric units and hospitals including inpatient child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) units, independent/private centres and the National Forensic Mental Health Service). This is a slight increase from 15,905 in 2024. Ninety-eight per cent of all admissions were to adult units, 2% were to CAMHS units and less than one per cent were to forensic units (Central Mental Hospital).

• There were 15,659 admissions to adult psychiatric units and hospitals in 2025, an increase of 81 admissions, from 15,578 in 2024. The rate of admissions increased from 302.5 per 100,000 in 2024 to 304.1 in 2025.
• First admissions in 2025 accounted for 37% of all admissions, increasing from 5,706 in 2024 to 5,852 in 2025. Similarly, the rate of first admissions increased from 110.8 per 100,000 in 2024 to 113.7 in 2025.
• Readmissions decreased from 9,872 in 2024 to 9,807 in 2025, with the rate decreasing from 191.7 per 100,000 in 2024, to 190.5 in 2025.
