Substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a significant public health challenge, with widespread implications for individuals, families, and communities. In the hospital setting, patients with SUDs require specialized and compassionate care that addresses both their acute medical needs and the complexities of their SUD. Although well-trained in managing concomitant medical conditions, nurses working in acute care settings often lack the specialized preparation to treat SUDs, as training has traditionally been provided in SUD-specific treatment centers, most often in outpatient and community settings.
