This position paper examines the urgent need to enhance physical health monitoring and intervention for individuals with mental illness, who experience significantly reduced life expectancy—often 10 to 20 years shorter than the general population—primarily due to preventable physical illnesses. Untreated comorbid conditions result in an estimated 15 percent increase in hospital admissions for this population, imposing substantial financial burden on healthcare systems annually. The association between mental illness and physical multimorbidity is both complex and bidirectional; however, individuals with mental illness frequently receive substandard physical care, with physical symptoms being often misattributed or overlooked. Coordinated social and clinical interventions are essential to challenge and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.
