This article provides an overview of the history of the development of family therapy practices within the Irish Health Service and the journey towards establishing a grade code and job description for the profession of family therapy within the statutory sector in Ireland. Emphasis is placed on the importance of protecting existing family therapy positions upon exit or retirement and of creating the scaffolding to put the profession on a more secure footing going forward.
