Pro-Active Policing Members of An Garda Síochána are on duty 365 days a year, pro-actively on patrol, responding to thousands of calls for service daily, both crime and non-crime and supporting communities.

During 2025 An Garda Síochána initiated the following interventions:

• Over 74,000 arrests (over 200 persons arrested every day)
• Over 134,000 criminal charges created (over 250 criminal charges preferred every day)
• Nearly 190,000 criminal summonses created (over 500 criminal summonses issued every day)
• Approx. 6,200 Adult Cautions administered (17 persons issued with an adult caution every day)
• Over 13,000 referrals to the Juvenile Diversion programme in accordance with the Children’s Act 2001 (35 juveniles referred to Juvenile Diversion programme every day)

Context: CSO figures show Ireland has recorded a 7% reduction in crime (2024/ 2019) while undergoing a 9.3% increase in population since 2019, and a far greater reduction in crime (2024/ 2002) from a peak in 2008, while experiencing a 37% increase in population since 2002. Long term trends continue to demonstrate an ongoing and sustained reduction in recorded crime. Comparing 22 year Recorded Crime statistics as per CSO Report CJA01 (https://data.cso.ie/table/CJA01 - type of offence) suggests lower levels of recorded crime than most years, with the main exceptions being the significant years (2020/ 2021) impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As reported by the 2025 Global Peace Index Ireland remains ranked overall the 2nd most peaceful country in the world, after Iceland, and in the top 10 Societal Safety and Security category. Global-Peace-Index-2025-web.pdf
