Despite advances in the characterization of substance use disorders (SUDs) as chronic brain disorders, specific clinical stages have yet to be established similar to other chronic illnesses. A dynamic structured staging model for SUDs that incorporates multidimensional factors including social determinants of health, could improve personalized treatment and enhance clinical translation of addiction research.
