This report details the key findings of a nationwide research survey commissioned by the HSE National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), carried out by Ipsos among those aged 18 and over in the population living in Ireland on the topic of cancer awareness and attitudes. There are over 24,000 incident invasive cancers (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) and over 9,000 cancer deaths per year in Ireland1. 1 in 2 people living in Ireland will be diagnosed with some form of invasive cancer (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) in their lifetime1. It is estimated that 30-50% of all cancers are preventable2. A key and effective measure in the prevention of cancer is to reduce exposure to modifiable risk factors3. These include behavioural factors e.g. tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption, metabolic factors e.g. overweight and obesity and environmental factors e.g. exposure to radon.
