This report presents a comprehensive evaluation of ALONE’s integrated community-based support model in Ireland. As Ireland’s older population rapidly increases, ALONE plays a vital role in supporting older people to age in place safely, independently, and with dignity.

The report highlights that older people supported by ALONE are often more vulnerable, experiencing higher loneliness, poorer quality of life, and greater use of health services compared to the general population. However, the findings are compelling: after engaging with ALONE’s services for just six months, older people reported notable improvements in loneliness, quality of life, and personal capability. These positive changes were particularly significant for those accessing Visitation and Telephone Support & Befriending services, which fostered enhanced relationships and contributed to increased confidence.

The evaluation also indicates that ALONE’s services may be contributing to reduced use of emergency and other community healthcare services such as GPs.  This translates to value for money, with estimated savings of €67 per person in both Emergency Department and Community Healthcare Services costs after six months. The report emphasizes that the implementation of ALONE’s service model is robust and responsive, demonstrating a deep commitment to person-centred care. Staff and volunteers consistently exhibit compassion and professionalism, while referrers express high satisfaction and a strong intent to continue recommending ALONE’s services. These positive outcomes provide a strong foundation for continued investment and expansion of ALONE’s vital support model.
