Alcohol use is the third leading risk factor for death and disability in the UK, estimated to affect 600 000 people in England alone,1 and costs the UK National Health Service (NHS) £3·5 billion a year.2 27 people in the UK die every day as a consequence of alcohol misuse. Data from the Office for National Statistics show that in 2022, there were 10 048 deaths from alcohol-related causes, the highest number on record (32·8% higher than the number of deaths in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic).
