In parallel with rising mortality from drug overdoses, hospitalizations for infectious complications from substance use are increasing. One in 9 hospitalized adults in the United States has a substance use disorder (SUD). Traditionally, patients with injection drug use (IDU)–associated infections such as infective endocarditis or osteomyelitis may be subjected to prolonged hospitalizations for intravenous (IV) antimicrobial treatment. Treating SUDs in hospitalized patients is now considered standard of care, though SUD care is still suboptimal in many hospitals.
