Moderate‐certainty evidence shows that carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and 4‐(methylnitrosamino)‐1‐(3‐pyridyl)‐1‐butanol (NNAL) levels at 1 to 52 weeks were probably lower with HTP use than with cigarette smoking. The 3‐hydroxypropylmercapturic acid (3‐HPMA) level may also be lower, but the evidence is at serious risk of bias. Low‐certainty evidence suggests there may be minimal to no important difference between groups in adverse events; there may be a similar pattern for serious adverse events, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and forced vital capacity (FVC), but the evidence for these outcomes is very uncertain.
