The Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS) is a national drug monitoring system intended to identify emerging trends of local and national concern in illicit drug markets, and form part of Drug Trends. This bulletin investigates naloxone knowledge among a sample of people that regularly use illicit stimulant drugs recruited from capital cities in Australia in 2022.

Using data from the 2022 Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS) (N=700) we found that among a sample of people who regularly use ecstasy and/or other illicit stimulants recruited from capital cities:

  • Almost half (46%) reported that they had ever heard of naloxone.
  • Of those that reported awareness and responded (n=312), the large majority (89%; 40% of the total sample) were able to correctly identify the purpose of naloxone (i.e., to reverse a drug overdose), whereas the remaining 11% (n=35) were unaware of its purpose or nominated an incorrect purpose (e.g., to help stop smoking).
