Tort, Sera and Pettersen, Karen (2021) Clinical question: Does varenicline or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) help prevent weight gain after smoking cessation? Cochrane Clinical Answers, (2021), DOI: 10.1002/cca.3881.

For adults who stop smoking, high‐certainty evidence shows little to no difference in weight at the end of treatment with varenicline compared with placebo; analyses at further endpoints were underpowered. Moderate‐certainty evidence shows that at the end of treatment with NRT, weight was slightly lower (on average, by 0.52 kg) than with placebo, and reviewers reported little to no difference between groups at 6 or 12 months.
