Welcome to Alcohol Action Ireland’s occasional newsletter.
January 2021 saw the ending of promotions, which incentivise alcohol use in Ireland. The commencement of Section 23 of the Public Health Alcohol Act (PHAA) means that a range of special offers are now illegal including:
- Promotions that allow for alcoholic drinks to be sold at a reduced price or given away for dree when bought alongside other products
- Short term promotions where the price of an alcohol drink is reduced for a period of less than three days.
These regulations, along with the commencement late last year of the measures around separation and visibility of alcohol products in shops and supermarkets are a step towards the denormalising of alcohol - a recognition that it is no ordinary grocery product.
AAI has also been encouraging the public to highlight any breaches of the legislation.
