87. Deputy Róisín Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the reason for the continued requirement for licensed premises to remain closed on Good Friday; if she will update the law in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [39067/16]

Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality (Deputy Frances Fitzgerald): The position is that the statutory provisions relating to the sale of alcohol on Good Friday, which have historical origins, will be examined in the context of the forthcoming Sale of Alcohol Bill. It will update the law relating to the sale, supply and consumption of alcohol in licensed premises by repealing the Licensing Acts 1833 to 2011, and the Registration of Clubs Acts 1904 to 2008, and replacing them with streamlined and updated provisions. Drafting of that complex Bill has been delayed due to other priorities and I am not in a position to say at present when it will be published.
