An outright ban on the sale of tobacco products at local markets and fairs has been urged. Fine Gael Seanad Health Spokesperson Senator Colm Burke said: “Shops, bars and off-licences have proven to be extremely compliant and responsible in ensuring that the controls placed on the sale of tobacco products are in place.”

“Unlike shops, which can be easily checked on by the HSE, it is extremely difficult to monitor the sale of tobacco at markets and fairs. Limiting the sale of tobacco products to shops and bars is the most effective means for the Department of Health and the HSE to regulate the implementation of its policies.”.....
