This essay aims provide a useful insight into this growing public health problem in our country (Ireland). It will describe the brief history and mechanism of actions of six classes of commonly abused prescription drugs (opioids, central nervous system depressants, central nervous system stimulants, antipsychotics, antidepressants, steroids) and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, prevalence of abuse, motives for abuse, the diversions of prescription drugs, and the impacts of abuse on the society. Implications for future research and service delivery are suggested.
