In an exclusive interview, Lloyd Mudiwa talks to British journalist, broadcaster, and political aide Alastair Campbell, and Irish GP specialising in substance abuse Dr Garrett McGovern, on Ireland and Britain’s relationships with alcohol.

If Alastair Campbell, who is best known for his work as Director of Communications and Strategy for former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, had one word to describe Ireland’s relationship with alcohol, it would be ‘troubled’. “And I would say the impact is being underplayed by policy makers, governments, even the medical profession.”

Campbell was in Dublin recently to support, along with leading Irish GP specialising in substance abuse Dr Garrett McGovern, the ‘Reduce Your Alcohol Use’ campaign, sponsored by Lundbeck Ireland, and launch a national survey on alcohol attitudes and usage, which showed that more than 80 per cent of people in Ireland say alcohol has a negative effect on someone they know.....
