91. Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans to introduce legislation requiring labels on alcohol products to warn of the dangers of drinking during pregnancy. [7174/11]

Minister for Health and Children (Deputy James Reilly): My Department is developing legislative proposals to provide for the inclusion of health advice/warnings on alcohol drink containers (bottles, cans) and on promotional materials. Providing advice to pregnant women on the dangers of consuming alcohol during pregnancy and providing other health information to the consumer at the point of consumption are an important means of informing the consumer about the dangers associated with the alcohol product being consumed. Work on the legislative proposals will be informed by the recommendations of the National Substance Misuse Strategy (NSMS) Steering Group which is due to report later this year.
