This provides a framework for a single-session brief intervention that focuses on the following, using the style and principles of motivational interviewing (MI):
•Raising awareness about alcohol, smoking and drug use
•Increasing motivation to change this
•Facilitating decision-making.
It is intended to be adapted by the worker to make it appropriate for the setting and this particular client group.
Setting: Specialist child and adolescent substance misuse services, as well as general clinical or non-clinical settings (for example teenage antenatal clinics, primary health care, specialist youth services, and educational and criminal justice settings).
Duration: One session of up to 50 minutes.
