Europe is one of the richest areas in the world, yet around 84 million Europeans live below the poverty line, and many face serious obstacles in accessing employment, education, housing, social services and financial services. Inspired by its founding principle of solidarity, the European Union has joined forces with its Member States to make 2010 the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Its goals cover four broad objectives and guiding principles:
