Management is committed to maintaining the prison drug-free. There is evidence of some illicit drug use in Castlerea Prison which is referred to at paragraph 5.39.

There is no dedicated drug-free area in the prison. There are no methadone maintenance programmes in operation. This position is supported by both management and medical staff. Pressure exists from prisoners to introduce a methadone programme into Castlerea Prison.
