Mooney, John (2001) Gangster: the inside story of John Gilligan, his drugs empire & the murder of journalist Veronic Guerin. Edinburgh: Cutting Edge Press.

In the summer of 1996 the Irish journalist Veronica Guerin was assassinated because of her investigations into the world of organized crime. This volume recreates the story behind her murder while chronicling the life of the man charged with her killing, John Gilligan. It uses first-hand interviews with Gilligan, his thugs, friends, family, enemies, anti-drugs activists, members of parliamentary organizations and the police. It tells of violence, kidnapping, shootings, criminal espionage, drug dealing and how criminal gangs vied for power to control the underworld and thought they could silence free speech by killing a journalist in pursuit of the truth.
