The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland has won an Irish Healthcare Award in the category of Best Public Health Initiative for its policy work on alcohol.

The Irish Healthcare Award for Best Public Health Initiative recognises important work carried out by clinicians, patients’ associations and the healthcare industry in promoting, sponsoring and partnering public health initiatives.

It is perhaps a sign of the significance of alcohol harm as a public health issue that last year's award in this category also went to a initiative on alcohol harm: to UCC for its action plan to reduce alcohol harm among its students.

Since we established a policy group on alcohol in 2012, the group, chaired by Prof Frank Murray, has been a strong voice in public debate on this issue.
