Objectives

Putting the Pieces Together is a training manual that was developed by the WRDATF to harness an integrated approach to working with young people, parents and communities on the subject of drugs and alcohol. The in-person session in early October takes place in Galway.

The other blended learning programme, in late October, will train people in the use and content of the manual. It aims is to act as a guide and a resource for persons working with young people of mixed abilities in an out-of-school setting. This blended learning course which includes 4 zoom sessions and approximately 6 hours self directed learning where all the materials including zoom link are provided on a learning management system. On completion of all elements of the course, participants will receive a copy of the manual via the post.

Content

There is a one day (in-person) course in Galway. This course is specifically for those who want to trainer others to delivery the Putting the Pieces Together programme. Following training they will be able to offer the two day Putting the Pieces Together course to youth workers and others working with young people and in the community. Applicants must completed the two day training course and have experience of delivering the programme to groups. Interested parities will be required to complete a Train the Trainer application which is available from training@wrdatf.ie and will be sent to all to complete the booking form. 

There is a blended learning course where participants attend 4 online zoom session and also complete a number of modules online. A short introduction and further information on the delivery and content of the course will be given in advance of the course.

The course aims:

  • To explore and challenge attitudes in relation to substance use
  • To enhance knowledge and understanding of substance use
  • To explore how drugs affect the brain and elicit their effects
  • To develop skills in delivering drugs and alcohol education
  • To develop an understanding of Best Practice in substance use education
  • To develop skills in relation to talking to young people about substance use
  • To give an introduction into the use of brief interventions
  • To develop an understanding of how to use the resource Putting the Pieces Together
  • To develop an awareness of services available locally and nationally

Target Group

Individuals who intend to complete Putting the Pieces Together awareness/prevention courses with young people within organisations and groups in out-of-school settings (either online or in-person)

Entry Requirement

Training is for those living in the West of Ireland, though we will accept trainees from outside.
