However, mental health services have been criticised for failing to adequately promote physical activities. Occupational Therapy, with its focus on meaningful everyday occupations, is well placed to incorporate physical activity interventions. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of men with psychosis participating in an Irish community-based football programme. Design/methodology/approach Six men with psychosis participated in qualitative interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Interview data were analysed thematically. Findings Participants identified many benefits of engaging in the programme. Football became a valued part of weekly routines and fostered re-engagement with previously valued roles. Participants identified improvements in social confidence and motor and process skills, as well as a positive impact on their mental and physical health. Originality/value This study highlights the value and meaning of participation in football for men with psychosis, as well as demonstrating the longer-term feasibility of football as a therapeutic medium in Occupational Therapy mental health service provision. Findings could help to promote the routine use of sports interventions to mental health services. date: 2017-10 browse_by: Moloney Laura publication: Irish Journal of Occupational Therapy volume: 45 numeric_volume: 2 number: 2 publisher: Emerald pagerange: 100-111 refereed: TRUE official_url: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/doi/full/10.1108/IJOT-06-2017-0015 doc_order_by: 1 jv_volume: 45 jv_pub: Irish Journal of Occupational Therapy vol_subject_list: GA2-4 , JF10-14 , JQ6-8 , T8-2 , VH4-2 vol_subject_list_words: G Health and disease > State of health > Mental health -- J Health care, prevention and rehabilitation > Prevention by sponsor or setting > Sports-based prevention -- J Health care, prevention and rehabilitation > Care by type of problem > Mental health care -- T Demographic characteristics > Man (men / male) vol_subject_list_geo_words: VA Geographic area > Europe > Ireland vol_subject_list_words_last: State of health - Mental health -- Prevention by sponsor or setting - Sports-based prevention -- Care by type of problem - Mental health care -- Man (men / male) vol_subject_list_geo_words_last: Europe - Ireland ace_words: Moloney Laura , Rohde Daniela sticky: 0 home_hide: yes citation: Moloney, Laura and Rohde, Daniela (2017) Experiences of men with psychosis participating in a community-based football programme.
